Gluten-free lip balms

Navigating gluten-free cosmetics can be tricky - do they contain gluten ingredients? Is there a risk of cross-contamination during manufacturing and are products tested? Taking these questions into account here I share information on gluten free lip balm brands as well as those that may appear safe but have a risk of cross-contamination.

Gluten-free

EOS Evolution of Smooth - gluten free :)

EOS is known for its iconic spherical lip balms, which are available in a variety of flavors including sweet mint sphere or lip balm stick, there is even a variety pack. They have a limited range of SPF lip balm too. Their lip balms are gluten free - it's noted on the packaging and in their FAQ's on their website (as of April 2024). Here's what they say:

"I am gluten-restricted. Can I use your products?

Yes! Our products do not contain gluten, and are not exposed to gluten during manufacturing. The oat ingredient found in some of our products is certified gluten-free. Our products are also checked in the final stage for gluten traces as an added precaution."

  • NO gluten ingredients

  • Products are NOT exposed to gluten during manufacturing

  • Products are tested for gluten

BADGER - GLUTEN FREE :)

Badger has a wide variety of GLUTEN-FREE (GF) Organic Lip Care Stick that come in a range of flavors: Unscented, Organic Vanilla Madagascar, Creamy Cocao Butter, Lavender and Orange. They also offer GF SPF lip balms and a post of other GF products. What's more they are a B-certified cooperation and their products are cruelty free and USDA organic! Here's what they have to say about gluten on the FAQ's page on their website:

"I have allergies to gluten, are badger products safe for me?

..Our products are gluten-free, and we ensure this by using our own machinery to regulate any potential contamination as well as avoiding ingredients that contain gluten. We do in-house testing to make sure that our products contain less than 10 ppm (parts per million) gluten, the same standard used by the GFCO, and half of what is recommended by the FDA for gluten-free claims on food products."

...Note that some of their other products (Badger's Shave Soap, Shampoo Bar, and Aloe Vera Gel) are produced offsite by a subcontract manufacturer and therefore cannot be guaranteed to be gluten-free, but they do not have any gluten-containing ingredients. You can see all their gluten free products here.

  • NO gluten ingredients

  • Products are NOT exposed to gluten during manufacturing

  • Products are tested for gluten

Balms, that may contain gluten!

I've read blogs listing these brands as gluten free, however after reviewing them, it is clear that they may contain gluten.

Burt's Bees - MAY contain gluten

Burt's Bees offers a range of lip balms made from natural ingredients however they are NOT certified gluten free. Here's what they say on the FAQ page on their website (April, 2024):

"I am gluten-restricted. What products are appropriate for my use?

We cannot provide a list of Burt's Bees products that are safe for use with your allergy because our products may have been manufactured on a shared line with products containing gluten, or raw materials used in our products may have been processed in a facility that also processes products containing gluten.

Therefore, we are unable to state that any Burt's Bees products are "gluten-free." Several of our products are known to contain certain allergens, because raw materials that contain or are made from the allergen are intentional ingredients in those products.

Please carefully review the ingredient list of any product prior to use, particularly because the listed ingredients for a product may change. If you have a known allergy to gluten, you should always consult with your physician if you have questions regarding whether it is safe for you to use a particular product."

  • Mixed ingredients

  • Products could be exposed to gluten during manufacturing

  • Products are NOT tested for gluten

Their Classic lip balm does not contain gluten ingredients, however their other products may use gluten containing ingredients such as Colloidal Oatmeal which is derived from oats and is listed on the ingredients page on their website.
